Sam Charles Alford
Sam Charles Alford Obituary
Athens - Sam Charles Alford, age 78, of Tyler, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, surrounded by his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and friend, Sam's legacy is one of selfless service, unwavering faith, and steadfast love.
Sam was born on October 22, 1946, in Logansport, Louisiana, to Sam Truitt Alford and Hettie Clarice Alford, who preceded him in death. He grew up in Conroe, Texas, where he was active in the Boy Scouts Sea Scout program. As a young man, he developed a love for music and was a gifted trumpeter in the Conroe High School band, graduating in 1965. He continued his love for music into adulthood, performing with the Athens Community Band and Trinity Valley Community College Band.
After high school, Sam enlisted in the United States Air Force and served courageously in Vietnam as part of the 819th RED HORSE squadron, constructing airstrips in dangerous and exposed conditions. His service reflected his quiet courage, humility, and unwavering dedication to others.
At age 20, Sam married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Charlotte Jean Tompkins. Together, they built a life of love, faith, and partnership spanning 58 years.
After completing his military service, Sam worked full-time to support his family while enrolled at Sam Houston State University. Through hard work, commitment, and thousands of miles and hours driving between jobs and classes, Sam received his bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration.
Professionally, Sam was highly respected in the business community. After a successful corporate career, Sam established Amerisource and became the owner of Crick Tool, which produces premium levels. He was admired for his integrity, servant leadership, and deep commitment to those he worked with. Sam had the unique joy of working alongside his wife, Charlotte, his daughter, Lori Brown, and his son-in-law, Scott Brown, for 25 years. He treated employees and customers like family and took a genuine interest in their lives, leading with humility and care.
Sam's greatest joy was his family. He was a loving father to Lori Brown and a proud grandfather to Conner, Brailey, and Sloan. For many years, he and Charlotte faithfully attended nearly every sporting event and activity the grandchildren were involved in. Sam cherished his grandchildren and welcomed every opportunity to "spoil" them in the best way possible. Sam loved hosting them at work, sharing meals, conversations, and laughter. He always made time to ask about their lives and celebrate their accomplishments.
Sam was a man of deep and abiding faith. He loved the Lord and modeled that love through his generosity, humility, and willingness to help without needing recognition. Whether guiding others through crisis, offering wisdom during life's hardest moments, or simply being present, he was a steady foundation for all who knew him.
Sam is survived by his wife, Charlotte Jean Alford; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Scott Brown; grandchildren, Conner Brown, Brailey Bean and husband Heston, and Sloan Brown; sister, Kathy Thompson and husband Ken; and brother, Fred Alford and wife Sharon; as well as sister-in-law Tricia Thompson and husband Larry; brother-in-law, Tommy Tompkins; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family members and cherished friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Autry's Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home, 1910 E Tyler St, Athens, TX 75751. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, September 19, 2025, at the same location.
