Burnes Ray "Red" Whitehead was born on April 17, 1924, in San Augustine, the son of Ambrose Whitehead and Frankie Bryant. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in August 1941 and served until September 1945, discharging with the rank of Corporal. Red was a double Purple Heart recipient and fought on the front lines in numerous overseas battles. Following his military service, Red returned home and began a long career with the T&P Railroad in 1946. Starting as a brakeman and switchman, he worked his way up to yardmaster before retiring in 1975. Beyond his service and career, Red embraced life fully. He loved the game of golf and proudly celebrated seven hole-in-ones over his 101 years — a testament to both skill and persistence. He also enjoyed playing cards and gambling.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Cynthia Gordy; and his son, Fred Whitehead.
Survivors include his wife, Johnie Whitehead of Athens; his children, Rebecca Noriega and spouse Rolando of Mesquite, Texas and Kathleen Roberts of Scurry, Texas; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Hannigan Smith Funeral Home.
