Graveside services for Nelda Wilbanks 89, of Athens have been scheduled for 3:00 P.M. Wednesday November 13, 2019 at Oaklawn Memorial Park, Athens, with Rev. Larry Fondren officiating, under the direction of Autry's Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.
Mrs. Wilbanks passed away November 11, 2019 in Tyler.
She was born June 29, 1930 in Dallas, Texas to the late Rueben and Lillian Ruth Hall Lee. Nelda was a lifelong resident of Athens and a member of Landmark Baptist Church. Nelda had a distinguished teaching career that spanned for over 40 years serving the Athens Independent School District. She made special connections with her students, and was reminded of this when they ran into each other in the community. After her husband's death Nelda started a Friday night game night so she and her friends could have fellowship together, which continued to this day. She was a loving mother, and a loyal friend who will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Roy Wilbanks, and son-in-law Marlin Perkins.
Survivors include her son Ken Wilbanks of Athens, daughters; Karen Perkins Wesson and her husband Hugh of New York, Texas, Pam Douglas and husband Damon of Athens, grandchildren; Doug Perkins of New York, Texas, Erik Perkins of Martins Mill, Erin Harrison of Dallas, great grandchildren; Devon Perkins, Hadley Perkins, Ella Perkins, Lucy Harrison and Lily Harrison, great-great grandchild; Jaxlyn Perkins and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Landmark Baptist Church, Athens.

Mrs. Wilbanks was my 4th grade teacher at Bel Air Elementary School. Principal at the time was Ben Shew.

Mrs. Wilbanks was such a GREAT teacher. Teachers of her caliber as so hard to find today. She will be missed.
