Ed Busch Obituary

Mabank, TX - Ed Busch died peacefully at home on June 22, 2025 in Mabank, Texas. Born August 28, 1944, Ed was a native of Detroit, Michigan.

From an early age, Ed dreamed of a career in broadcasting. First casting his lot with local disc jockeys, he landed several jobs at radio stations in Detroit. Soon after, the talk show bug emerged; asked to fill in for a talk show host on vacation, Ed knew where his future lay.

Within the genre of talk show radio, Ed honed his skills and made his mark at major stations in Detroit, then Cleveland, and eventually came to Dallas with a full Detroit crew, taking over WFAA and KZEW radios.

His talent for talk and interviewing made him a success in Dallas. In 1975, he was recruited by the powerhouse San Francisco talk station, KNBR. Two years later, he made his way back to Dallas, which had become home. Ed had quite a fan base of listeners tuning in daily, eager to hear what fascinating guest Ed was interviewing or his thoughts on any particular subject.

In addition to talk radio, Ed appeared in front of the camera through several television gigs. He also began a successful consulting role working with stations around the country. Finally, he put his talents in the production arena, producing national talk shows in conjunction with the Associated Press. Ed stood out for his deep knowledge of many subject matters, his ability to make others feel comfortable, and his natural, spontaneous on-air presence. The childhood dream of a broadcasting career was indeed fulfilled. In 2002, Ed was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. Part of his retirement included being more active in the local ham radio community.

Ed married Sydney Trum in San Francisco in 1975, forming a long and happy partnership. In 1989, Ed and Sydney bought their first lake house at Cedar Creek Lake, hoping to enjoy weekends there. In 2000, they gave up the weekend fight and became full-time residents. Ed loved lake living and welcoming others to the Busch home.

Ed has always had a passion for improving the lives of animals. He proudly served as president of the SPCA of Texas - Dallas board for two terms. In 2001, Sydney and Ed realized the desperate need for low-cost pet spay/neuter within the Cedar Creek Lake community, and they spent a year raising funds and recruiting volunteers for this effort. In 2002, Friends of the Animals opened. They perform surgeries one day a week and have now completed over 65,000 surgeries.

Ed was the son of Rudy and Mary Busch, and brother to Diane (deceased) and Noreen. He was a beloved member of Sydney's family and leaves many admiring in-laws, nieces, and nephews who will miss him greatly, along with all the friends made over the decades past.

For anyone considering a memorial gift, it was Ed's wish that you please donate to your local animal shelter, where your contribution will do the most good in your community; then consider volunteering or adopting one of many loving animals just waiting for a forever home.
