Athens - Arthur H. Hall, Sr., beloved husband, father, and friend, was born in Sugar Land, Texas, on August 28, 1932, and passed away peacefully in Dallas, Texas, on October 30, 2025, at the age of 93. Arthur was raised in Sublime, Texas, and graduated Salutatorian from Waelder High School in Waelder, Texas, in 1949, where he served as Class Vice President and played on the baseball and basketball (they went to the State Championship!) teams. He then joined the United States Navy, and following his active duty, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1956, where he was a member of Sigma Iota Epsilon, a national honorary and professional management fraternity. Following graduation, Arthur moved to Dallas where he met the absolute love of his life, Sundra ("Sunny") Smith Hall.
Arthur and Sunny married in 1958 and lived in the Lakewood area of Dallas until they had small children. They moved to Richardson, Texas, in 1963 where they raised their family, until settling back in Lakewood in 1980, and ultimately back to Sunny's hometown of Athens, Texas, for retirement.
Arthur led an incredibly full and significant life. He retired at the age of 56 after a successful career with Southwestern Life Insurance Company, rising through the ranks to lead their investment services company as President. Arthur was an ever-present and extremely involved father to his three children. From being the Scout Leader, coaching (and winning city championships!) for both boys in basketball and football, leader in Indian Guides and Indian Princess, to president of the private community swimming pool, the list goes on and on, he always put his family first. Besides his marriage to Sunny, and his children, one of his most prized accomplishments was proudly serving his country in the United States Navy in Naval Intelligence, and retiring at the rank of Captain. He was a highly decorated veteran, having served on the aircraft carrier USS Antietam during the Korean War.
Retirement was just as full and productive for Arthur, reflecting his lifelong commitment to leadership and service. He was very active in the community, serving on multiple Boards of Directors including the Athens Cemetery Association Board. As a devoted member of The First Presbyterian Church, Arthur was active and served in various leadership positions, including as a church Elder. He was also active in and a member of various lineage societies, including serving as President of his local Sons of The American Revolution chapter. Arthur spent the last nine years of his life living with his daughter in Dallas, after Sunny's passing. He will be remembered for his steady leadership, his humor, and the warmth and generosity he shared with everyone he met.
Arthur is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Aubrey Hall, Sr., and Cecilia Kloppenburg Hall, his brother Charles Aubrey Hall, Jr., his sister Rosemary Hall Flowers, and his wife Sundra Smith Hall. He is survived by his sons J. Clayton Hall (Stephanie) and Arthur H. Hall, Jr. (Katherine), his daughter Leigh ("Bootsie") Hall, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Blake O. Bumbard, Mark H. Cline, Ph.D., Chris S. Coker, Kelly C. Hannah, James M. Turner, D.V.M., R. Brad Womack, and Thomas R. Arnold (Honorary).
His strong faith and love of his church were apparent to all who knew him. If desired, memorials may be made to The First Presbyterian Church, 405 E. Corsicana Street, Athens, Texas 75751. A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 6th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Autry's Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.
