Athens - Anne Charlyne (Andrews) Hughes, 89, of Malakoff, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2026, in Tyler, surrounded by her beloved family. A memorial service has been planned for August 1st in the Methodist Church of Malakoff at 11:00 am, with a family burial preceding. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Methodist Church of Malakoff in Charlyne's memory.

Born on August 2, 1936, in Henderson County, Texas, Charlyne was the daughter of William Watson Andrews and Iola May (Griffith) Andrews. A proud graduate of Malakoff High School's Class of 1954, she went on to earn her nursing credentials through East Texas State in Corsicana. Charlyne faithfully served her community as both a surgical nurse and a hospice nurse, providing comfort and care to countless patients and families throughout the years. During her time as an optical nurse, she traveled to several third world countries using her skills to assist in valuable operations to the under privileged. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her nursing career and into every aspect of her life. She was a devoted lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Malakoff where she sang in the church choir and generously shared her creativity and talents through the Methodist Women's Group, helping design beautiful wreaths and decorations for fundraisers and church events. A gifted floral designer, Charlyne spent many years working at Fred's Flowers in both Malakoff and Athens. She found great joy in gardening and attending her gardening club, creating floral arrangements, traveling, attending book club and listening to music. Above all else, Charlyne treasured her family and championed all of their talents and goals. "Grandmother" as she was most lovingly known as, played an instrumental role in helping raise her grandchildren and was a constant figure at every sporting event, game, concert or recital. She carried on this tradition with her great-grandchildren, who brought her endless pride and joy.

Charlyne was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband and high school sweetheart Robert Clinton Cross, her siblings, Willie May Hellner and Billy Wayne Andrews and her daughter in law Sheri Cross.

She leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory, including her husband, friend and travel companion of 22 years, Don Hughes of Malakoff; sons, Clint Cross and wife Beth of Athens, John Cross and wife Amanda of Malakoff, sister and best friend, Sandy Bankston and husband Jim of Manvel; grandchildren, Jennifer Vincent and husband Kelly, Sarah Hendrix and husband Johnathan, Kathrine Hatfield and husband Josh, Lorin Roberts and husband Eric, Lindsey Ruiz, and Anna McDaniel and husband Jeff; and great-grandchildren Olivia and Charley Vincent, Raylan and Clint Hendrix, Nolen and Ethan Roberts, Valerie Ruiz, and Alexis, Autumn and Amelia McDaniel.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home family.
