Percy's Story

A funeral service for Percy L. Simmons, Athens, is scheduled for 10:00 AM Monday, December 19th at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home, followed by a brief interment at Oak Lawn Memorial Park.
Percy died Wednesday, December 14th in Athens, three weeks before his 100th birthday celebration.
He was born on January 6th, 1917 in Willow Springs Community to Charlie Thomas and Billie Tempie Welch Simmons and was a lifelong resident of Willow Springs Community.
After serving in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1942 to 1946, Percy was employed as a surveyor with The Texas Highway Department, retiring in 1979.
Percy was a lifelong member of the Willow Springs Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and taught the Men's Sunday School Class for over 35 years. A huge fan and supporter of TVCC Athletics, Percy was the recipient of The Cardinal Ambassador Award in 2009. For many years, Percy and his younger brother, Tom, enjoyed raising cattle together on land that has been in their family for approximately 150 years.
Percy is preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Christine Barnes Simmons; brothers, John K. Simmons and Charlie Thomas Simmons; and nephew, Wm. David Simmons.
Survivors include nephews Gary Simmons of Dallas and John Simmons of Muleshoe.
Pallbearers will be Gary Simmons, John K. Simmons, Jr., David Simmons, Billy Simmons, Butch Boyd and Kenneth Boyd.
Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday, December 18th from 3:00 - 5:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the TVCC Athletic Department at 100 Cardinal Dr. Athens, TX 75751.
