Barbara Oleta Bass Boyd, age 94, passed away on June 23, 2017. She was born July 1, 1922 to Albert Ridgel Bass and Virginia Ruth Morton Bass. She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband of 55 years, J.R. Boyd; daughter, Nana Ruth Boyd Cox; son, Barry Dan Boyd; grandson, Scott Edward Posey; brother Paul Bass and husband Jack McCool.
She is survived by: her daughter, Kay Boyd and life partner, Gary Hicks; granddaughter, Larissa McLean and husband Blake; three great-granddaughters, Grace, Ginny and Emery McLean; sisters, Norma Jean Dewbre and Sally Jeffrey; and many loving nieces and nephews, many who knew her as Aunt Dete.
She was a life long member of the First Baptist Church of Athens where she was a member of the Women's Ministry Union (WMU), and helped with the youth group, GA's. She was a member of the Athens Chapter of Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron. She retired after working for the Texas Department of Human Services for 30 years. She was an avid reader, loved playing dominoes and cards, and music was always playing in the background. While she may not have considered cooking a hobby, she was a wonderful cook. She was a loving Granny, and she and Paw Paw loved the summer visits by their grandchildren, Scott and Larissa.
The family would like to thank the staff of South Place Nursing Home for their care and support during the seven years she lived there.
Graveside Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at the Rome Cemetery in Athens. Under the direction of Autry's Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home, Athens.
