Memorial services for Gerald D. Bergman "Jerry" 81, Athens have been scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Saturday January 7, 2017 at First Baptist Church, Athens with Rev. Kyle Henderson officiating.
Mr. Bergman passed away Sunday January 1, 2017 in Athens.
He was born August 4, 1935 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Gerald was the son of Herbert and Dorothy Bergman. Gerald married Mary Alice Askew on October 11, 1980 in Dallas. They moved to Athens full time in 1993 where he was active as a member of First Baptist Church and Tuesday night men's Bible Study.
Jerry served two years in the United States Army and four years in the Army reserve. He was a career Federal employee serving 25 years with the Department of Defense and 12 years with the Environmental Protection Agency as a Mainframe Computer Specialist.
Jerry loved sailing his Hobie Cat around Lake Athens, loving the lake he served several years as secretary for the LAPOA. His hobby was wood working, making country furniture, numerous doll houses, toy barns, wagons and other toys for the grandchildren.
Mr. Bergman was preceded in death by his parents; Herbert and Dorothy Bergman and three year old daughter Rebecca Helen Bergman.
Survivors include his wife Mary Alice Bergman, Athens; brothers Vernon Bergman, Minneapolis, MN; Paul Bergman, Grantsburg, WI; daughters Laurie Bartsch, Windom, MN and Sarah Wiebe, Bingham Lake, MN; step children Ron Askew, Austin, Texas; Kenny Askew, Des Moines, Iowa; Suzanne Adams, Dallas, Texas; Scott Askew, Waxahachie, Texas; twenty one grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
