Doyle's Story

Services for Doyle L. Holt were held Saturday, February 11, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Mabank, Texas with Rev. Larry Strandberg II officiating. Interment followed the service at Payne Springs Cemetery. Doyle was born on January 11, 1937 in Payne Springs to parents Burnice and Gladys (Sutherlin) Holt and entered into eternal rest on February 8, 2017 at the age of 80. Doyle graduated from Eustace High School and after went to work for his cousin, Durwood Phillips, laying concrete. It was hot, back breaking work and he decided that he did not want to do that type of work the rest of his life. He decided that he needed to go to Barber school, as this would provide him a living and a cool place to work in the summer and a warm place in the winter. Doyle and Diane married on July 7, 1956 in Payne Springs. The draft was still in effect during this time period. Not wanting to get their lives started and a family started, they decided Doyle should go ahead and enlist and get his military service commitment taken care of. Diane followed him to Ft. Knox, KY until his training was complete. He was part of the 3rd Armored Division Spearhead Unit, Motor Pool. Doyle was scheduled to ship to Germany for the remainder of this service time. Diane came back to Texas only to shortly notify Doyle that he was going to be a father. Doyle was discharged from the Army on October 31, 1958. His first born, daughter, Cindy Lynn, would turn 1 year old in just 16 days when he would finally see her in person. Oh, happy day! Since he was shipping out, a replacement in the motor poll was needed. The new recruit that replaced him was none other than Elvis A. Presley, the one and only. He always said, "Somebody had to replace him". After getting out of the Army, Doyle opened his first Barber Shop in Austin, Texas. Doyle moved to Mabank in 1969 and opened Mabank Barber Shop in 1971. He continued Barbering until the age of 72, and retired after many years of service to his community. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Mabank, where he also served as a Deacon. Doyle was a very loving and caring man who will be missed tremendously by his family and friends.
