Bobby's Story

Funeral services for Bobby Lee Richards have been scheduled for 1 p.m., Tuesday May 9, 2017 at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home with Rev. Sherman Mayfield officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park. There will be a visitation on May 8, 2017 at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Bobby was born June 16, 1931 in Murchison, Texas to Tollie and Jewel Edwards Richards, and passed away May 3, 2017 in Tyler, Texas.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, Chester, Oneil, Emery Earl and D.C. James; stepson, LeRoy Aiken the third.
Bobby went to grade school in Murchison, and graduated from Brownsboro High School in 1950.
He played football all four years, senior year being team captain and playing fullback. He later attended Henderson County Junior College, where he was a fixture in the line.
Bobby was in the U.S. Navy from Jan. 15, 1951 to Dec.1 1954. He was aboard an aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Kearsarge, in the Korean War. He also received Good Conduct ribbon, National Defense ribbon, United Nation ribbon and the Korean Service ribbon. He served as captain and LG for the Rockets while in the navy.
He later retired from Carrier Air Conditioning after 25 years of service. During retirement, he worked for Brookshire's for 10 years, and worked for Athens ISD in the transportation department for six years.
Bobby played golf, and loved working in his garden. He remained a big football fan, and never missed a game, if he could help it. Bobby never met a stranger, and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Bobby is survived by: his loving wife of 47 years, Barbara Veach Richards of Murchison; brother J.T. Richards, Murchison; sister-in-law, Imogene Richards, Tyler, Bettie Miller, of Athens; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jordan Wright, Bobby Richards, Billy Richards, Mike Richards, Amado Rojas and Andrew Splawn.
