Rowena "Rue" Sholars, 92, of New York, Texas passed away on September 30, 2017. Her family misses her terribly but is at peace knowing she is reunited with her beloved sister and parents.
Rowena was born on May 12, 1925 in New York, Texas to Dennis and Clara Sholars. She graduated from LaPoyner High School in May of 1942 and went on to receive a degree from Tyler Commercial College in Tyler, Texas.
During World War II, Rowena aspired to become a pilot and serve but due to poor eyesight she was unable pass the physical exam. Not one to be easily deterred, she went on to serve as a flight tower operator.
Following the war, Rowena moved to San Diego, California where she began her career at Encyclopedia Americana before moving to the Hagger Company. Rowena later relocated to Vienna, Virginia where she had a successful real estate career. She returned to her home town of New York, Texas in 1980 and became a bookkeeper for Athens Commission where she retired from in 1996.
In addition to a career woman, Rowena was a loving mother to her son and daughter as well as the "best grandmother ever" to her granddaughter and grandson. She was a devoted sister and a cherished cousin.
Rowena never met a stranger and was the life of the party - especially if the party was in her honor. She was an avid 42 player with a competitive spirit. As the matriarch of her family, Rowena was strong, confident, and giving. She was a commanding presence and was loved as fiercely as she loved.
Rowena is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Eric Nichols of Longview, Texas; son, Paul String of Athens, Texas; granddaughter, Erica Nichols of Dallas, Texas; and grandson, Bryant Nichols of Portsmouth, Virginia.
A memorial in her honor will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the LaRue Civic Center.
