Funeral services for Omega Dunnington, 82, Athens, is scheduled for 1 p.m., Saturday, June 10, 2017, at the General Assembly Athens Church of the Living God, P.G.T., with Darryl Dunnington, eulogist. Burial will be at North Athens Cemetery under the direction of Garrett & Tucker Funeral Home of Athens.
Omega Dunnington was born Aug. 16, 1934 in Athens. He died June 3, 2017 in his home.
Omega Dunnington received his high school diploma from Fisher High School in Athens, B.S. degree from Texas College, Masters in Education from East Texas State University and certification in Mid-Management from Stephen F. Austin University. For years, he served as a teacher and facilitator for the Henderson County Junior College Adult Education Program. As an employee of AISD for 34 years, he taught Vocational Occupational Education, and coached track, football, basketball and varsity baseball. He was an assistant principal at Athens Middle School, and concluded his career as the principal of R. C. Fisher.
As a member of the General Assembly Church of the Living God, P.G.T., he served as the recording secretary, and the youth director for many years. In his local church, he served as a deacon, trustee, Sunday school teacher and a member of the male chorus. He also served as pastor of the Kerens Church of the Living God.
He was a board member of the Region VII Educational Service Center in Kilgore, president of the Henderson County NAACP Chapter, member of the Breakfast Kiwanis Club, volunteer for the Labor of Love, volunteer for the summer youth league baseball program, member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity and member of Masonic Lodge No. N0107.
He was proceeded in death by: his father, Willie Dunnington; mother, Frankie (Sharpe) Dunnington; brother, Jessie Lee Sharpe; sisters, Juanita Ervin and Willie Mae Williams.
Survivors include: spouse, Bettye J. Dunnington; children; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2017 at the General Assembly Church of the Living God. Closed casket service. Viewing one hour prior to the service.
