Mona's Story

Mona Janette Coleman Buchanan passed away peacefully June 1, 2017, at East Texas Medical Center, Tyler, Texas. Mona was born on May 15, 1933, to Raymond and Louise Coleman. She was the loving, devoted wife of William (Bill) Buchanan for 65 years. Besides Bill, she leaves behind her sister, Carla (Joe) Moore - Plano, TX, four children, Brenda (Neal) Thompson - Hot Springs Village, AR, Will Buchanan, Jr. - Baton Rouge, LA, Barbara (Steve) Melchior - Pearland, TX and Lisa (Mike) Fuller - Houston, TX, 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, and her dear friends Clara and Finlee Wagner.

Mona lived her early years in Dallas. She attended North Texas University majoring in Spanish. Mona met Bill on a blind date and that was it, it was love at first sight! Mona and Bill traveled the country during their early married years in an Airstream trailer while Bill worked as a geologist with two children in tow. Although she couldn't boil water when they got married Mona became a gourmet cook over the years and took delight in trying new recipes. Mona was a stay-at-home mom much of her life, but ventured into the business world after her kids grew up. She was admired by all she worked with. Mona also resided in El Paso, Tulsa, Baton Rouge, Chicago, Wimberley, Groesbeck before finally retiring to Echo Lake, Murchison, Texas.

Mona had many hobbies, including crocheting, reading and beating Bill at gin every morning. Over the years she earned enough at gin to go on three vacations and buy a new car! She also earned her Life Master bridge ranking, playing the past 20 years in Athens.

Mona was a very special mother, leading by example and loving her family with deep devotion. She had a great sense of humor, even at her worst times she would always try to lighten the mood and get those around her to smile or laugh. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the doctors and nurses at ETMC Tyler and Genesis Rehab Tyler for the love and care that was given to our Mom.

A celebration of Mona's life is being planned for July 22 at the pavilion at Echo Lake.
