Mary Throne Massengale
Mary was born on December 5, 1921, at the family's home on the Wofford farm outside of Athens, Texas. She was the second child and first daughter of William A. Wofford and Mary Alma (Avant) Wofford. After high school, Mary went on to graduate with a bachelor's degree in home economics, followed by a master's degree in education. Mary taught school in Crossroads and San Antonio, before returning home and teaching elementary school for 25 years in Athens. Mary retired in 1982.
In 1966, Mary married Maynard Massengale. They were happily married for 34 years until Maynard's passing in 2000. Passionate about education, it was a thrill for Mary to see her students grow and thrive into adulthood, and it brought her much pleasure when she would cross paths with former students long after her retirement. She was named to Who's Who in American Teachers and was a devoted member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association.
Mary and Maynard were avid supporters of Trinity Valley Cardinals athletics, particularly Cardinal football and both men's and women's basketball. They once travelled to the Bahamas to cheer on the men and women Cardinals basketball teams in a tournament. In 1994, they supported Cardinal football by traveling to Pasadena for TVCC's bid at the Jr. College National Championship.
In addition to her husband, Maynard, and her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her brother, William Avant Wofford, her sisters, Hattie Sue Stuck and Jettie Martha Byrne, and her niece, Therese Quitta. She will be missed by her surviving nieces and nephews: Cindy Wofford, Alec Wofford, Leslie Wood, Mal Byrne, Tim Byrne, Mary Anne Flatley and Tommy Byrne, as well as many great nieces and nephews.
There will be a graveside ceremony at Athens Cemetery, December 27, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mary's memory to the Henderson County Retired School Personnel Association Scholarship Fund. Mail donations to Patty Curtis, 2821 Trey Cir., Athens, 75752.
Services are under the direction of Autry's Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.
